Virtual Cycle - Windmills of Spain
Castilla-La Mancha, a region in central Spain, is renowned for its picturesque
windmills, which are iconic symbols of the area. These windmills, known as
"molinos de viento" in Spanish, have a significant cultural and historical value.
They are particularly famous due to their association with Miguel de Cervantes'
classic novel, "Don Quixote," in which the protagonist famously mistakes the
windmills for giants.
These windmills were traditionally used for grinding grain, harnessing the strong
winds of the La Mancha plains. They typically have a cylindrical base made of stone,
with wooden blades.
