One of the most effective ways to overcome these challenges is the use of an underwater tripod.
An underwater tripod provides a stable platform for the camera and allows the filmmaker to concentrate on the subject rather than constantly correcting the camera position. Building Your Own Underwater Tripod
Instead of buying an expensive dedicated underwater tripod, we built our own using equipment that is commonly used in underwater photography.
Our DIY system combines ball adapters, clamps, and camera strobe arms to create a flexible and extremely stable underwater support.
The result is a simple but highly effective underwater tripod that gives us the stability and control needed to capture exceptionally smooth, steady footage.
Because the individual ball adapters, clamps, and strobe arms can be repositioned, the system can also be adapted to many different underwater camera housings and filming situations.
Underwater Tripod Use in Our Film Production
We use our underwater housing tripod for a large part of our film production, particularly when filming expansive coral reefs and wide-angle underwater scenes.
By keeping the camera completely stable and allowing the reef and marine life to move naturally through the frame, we can create a calm, immersive atmosphere.
The result is footage that feels less like watching a film and more like being underwater yourself, surrounded by the ocean and its inhabitants.
Filming Shy Marine Animals
The tripod is also an essential tool when filming shy and easily disturbed creatures.
Instead of approaching the animal with a camera in hand, we carefully position the camera, start recording, and then leave the immediate scene. This gives the animal the freedom to behave naturally without being influenced by the constant presence or movement of a diver or camera operator.
