The Dune of Pilat, also called the Great Dune du Pilat, rises along the Atlantic coastline in the Gironde department of southwestern France, marking the gateway to Arcachon Bay. Famous for being the tallest sand dune in Europe, it stretches for nearly 3 kilometers and can reach heights of around 100–110 meters, though its exact shape and elevation shift constantly due to winds and tides.
Visitors often climb the dune—either by a designated staircase in peak season or directly on the sand—to experience its dramatic contrasts: on one side, the deep green of the Landes forest, and on the other, the shimmering blue of the Atlantic Ocean. The sweeping views from the crest are especially stunning at sunrise and sunset, drawing photographers, hikers, and nature lovers from around the world.
