Alvor is a small, traditional fishing village on the western edge of the Algarve, right where the Alvor River meets the Atlantic. Even though it’s close to busier resort areas, it still feels laid-back and local, with a postcard-pretty waterfront, bobbing boats, and a relaxed pace that’s perfect for slow exploring—on foot or by bike.
One of Alvor’s biggest highlights is the Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve, a protected wetland of dunes, salt marshes, and tidal channels. The wooden boardwalk runs through this landscape and is ideal for cycling and easy walks, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light is soft and the area is at its quietest. It’s also a great spot for birdwatching—you can often see waders and other coastal birds feeding in the shallows.
The village center has cobbled streets, small squares, and plenty of cafés and seafood restaurants—many specializing in fresh fish, clams, and other local catches. For beaches, Praia de Alvor offers a wide stretch of sand and big Atlantic skies, while nearby coves and coastline viewpoints give you classic Algarve scenery: duneDigis, sea air, and rolling waves.
