Bucharest, in southern Romania, is the country’s capital and largest city, often nicknamed “Little Paris” for its early-20th-century boulevards and Belle Époque architecture. It’s a city of contrasts: grand historic avenues and hidden Orthodox churches sit alongside bold communist-era landmarks on wide, straight boulevards, with the Dâmbovița Rivercutting through the centre.

One of the most famous sights is the Palace of the Parliament, an enormous symbol of the Ceaușescu era, while nearby neighbourhoods mix lively cafés, markets, and elegant old villas. Bucharest is also surprisingly green—parks and gardens such as Cișmigiu Gardens, Herăstrău (King Michael I) Park, and the Bucharest Botanical Garden are especially beautiful in autumn, when the trees turn the city into a wash of warm gold and red tones.
