Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly coastal capital, set where the River Tagus (Tejo) meets the Atlantic, and it’s the westernmost capital city in mainland Europe.  From São Jorge Castle, you get classic skyline views over Alfama’s pastel buildings and rooftops, the Tagus Estuary, and the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge.

The city is also famous for its tiles—at the National Azulejo Museum you can see centuries of decorative ceramic work that helped shape Lisbon’s look and feel. Beyond the historic neighbourhoods and grand avenues, Lisbon quickly turns into coastline: a string of Atlantic beaches and seaside towns stretches west toward Cascais and Estoril.

In population terms, the wider urban/metro area is roughly around 2.7–3.0 million people (depending on how it’s measured). And with roots reaching back millennia, it’s often described as one of Western Europe’s oldest cities, blending deep history with a bright, breezy, modern energy.
